Dag 2 en 3: Tambacounda, Sare Boubou, Dialacoto en Tomboronkoto

Dag 2: Tambacounda en Sare Boubou

07u: We staan vroeg op en ontbijten in het hotel van Kaolack. 

We are getting up early and have breakfast in the hotel in Kaolack.

7u30: Tijd om te vertrekken naar Tambacounda.

Time to head to Tambacounda.

12u30: We zijn na een lange rit aangekomen in Tambacounda. De medicijnen worden gesorteerd en de andere bagage wordt naar de kamer gebracht.

We have arrived in Tambacounda after a long trip. The medications are being sorted and the other lugage is being brought to the room.

13u15: We gaan op zoek naar rijst om uit te delen, samen met wat snoep voor kinderen. Daarna was het tijd voor lunch, voor de verandering rijst met uitjes en vlees.

We are looking to buy some rice to hand out as well as some sweets for the children.

Tambacounda is de warmste regio van senegal en bestaat uit 50.000 inwoners. Hier bevindt zich het laatste kruispunt van senegal voor de grens met Gambia en Mali.

Tambacounda is the hottest area in Senegal and exists of 50.000 inhabitants. This is where the last crossing of Senegal is before the boundary with Gambia and Mali. 

14u: We halen Assane op, de directeur en leraar van het schooltje in Sare Boubou. Dit is een kleine gemeenschap waar we heel warm en hartelijk, met nodige dans en tambour muziek, ontvangen werden. De dankbaarheid van de mensen voor onze komst was meteen duidelijk en overweldigend! Een heel bijzonder gevoel. 

We are picking up Assane, who is the director and a teacher of the little school in Sare Boubou. This is a small community where we were welcomed very kindly with a lot of music and African dances. The greatfulness of these people was immediately clear and amazing. This feeling was very special.

Na een lange en uitgebreide verwelkoming is het tijd om de rijst oficieel te overhandigen. Daarna mogen de kindjes aan hun schooltje in de rij gaan staan voor een snoepje. Het is bijzonder om te zien hoe dankbaar ze zijn met iets dat voor ons zo klein is en hier zo'n €0,04 per stuk kost. 

After a long and extensive welcoming it is time to officially hand out the rice. Afterwards we are handing out lollypops to the children while they were standing in front of their school. It is astonishing how greatful they are for such a small gift for us, since they only cost €0,04 a piece.

Na het bezoek aan Sare Boubou brachten we Assane terug naar zijn eigen dorpje waar we hem het geld overhandigd hebben voor een nieuwe waterput aan de school.

After visiting Sare Boubou we brought Assane back to his own village and this is where we handed him the money to build a new water well next to the school.

18u: Ons eerste bezoek aan één van de projecten zit erop. Het was een emotionele dag en we sluiten de dag rustig af ik het hotel.

This was our first visit to one of the projects of Acción Senegal. It was a very emotional dat and we end this day at the hotel.

Dag 3: Dialacoto en Tomboroncoto

8u: Na een iets langere nachtrust is het weer tijd voor ontbijt waarna we meteen doorgaan naar een marktje. De geur is de meest indringende herinnering van deze markt. Hierna vertrokken we naar Dialacoto, waar Accion Senegal het materniteitsgebouw gerealiseerd heeft en ondervoede kindjes geholpen worden. Zo ook Ibou, wie een grote indruk achterliet. Alsook brachten we hier extra medicijnen. Hier heeft Accion Senegal eerder al een echograaf gebracht, de enige waar zwangere vrouwen van 62 dorpen terecht kunnen. Hier werd in 2012 ook al een ambulance gebracht. Ondertussen hebben ze er ook elektriciteit aan de hand van zonnepanelen en stromend water.

After a slightly longer night of sleep, it is time for breakfast again. Afterwards we leave the hotel and visit an local market. The smell is the most acrimonious memory we will have from this visit. We left the market for a visit to the next project in Dialacoto. Acción Senegal has realized a maternity home as well as the providing of medicins. They also help mall nutricius children, like Ibou. The organisation has brought an ambulance in 2012 as well as an ultrasound machine, this is the only one which women can use among 62 villages. They currently have electricity thanks to solar panels as well as running water.

Ook zijn we gaan kijken naar het schooltje voor de allerkleinste, opnieuw een project van Accion Senegal.

We also took a look at a little school for the smallest children, which was a project by Acción Senegal too. 

Tijdens het feestelijke ontvangst werd de vreugde verstoord door een busje dat op hoge snelheid kwam aangereden. Dit busje zat overvol en toen de deuren openden vlogen enkele jonge mensen met een soort van aanval uit het busje op de grond. Ze werden elke door zo'n 5 à 6 jongens vastgehouden om hen te kalmeren en werden naar de dokterpost gebracht om een kalmerend middel te krijgen. Het was een heftig moment dat ons nog lang zal bijblijven.

During the celebratory welcome, we were being interrupted by a overcrowded van passing in high speed. They stopped and when the doors opened there were several youngsters falling out of it and it looked like they were in some kind of trance. They could not handle their own bodies anymore and it was really scary to see. They were each held by 5 to 6 boys who kept them in place to try to calm them a little. Afterwards they were brought to the doctor's station where they got a medicine to calm down. This memory won't fade. 

Toen alles weer wat gekalmeerd was, konden we de medicijnen officieel overhandigen en werden we duizenden malen bedankt met speeches.

When everyone was calmed down a little, we could hand out the medicins officially and they thanked us many many times in speeches.

Het bezoek aan Dialacoto werd afgesloten met een onverwachte maaltijd van het huis. Deze gastvrijheid gaf ons een dubbel gevoel. We vonden dit enorm vriendelijk en gul dat ze dit voor ons wouden terugdoen ondanks dat ze zelf maar zo weinig hebben.

The visit of Dialacoto ended with an unexpected dinner on the house. This hospitally was double for us because we found it so kind and generous that they would share this with us despite the fact that they have so little themselves. 

15u: Tijd om te vertrekken naar het volgende dorpje, Tomboronkoto, waar we enkel medicijnen afgeven en later nog terug zullen komen. 

Time to leave for the next village, Tomboronkoto, where we only left the medicins but where we will return lateron during our journey. 

19u: Na een lange bumpy ride komen we aan in ons hotel in Kédougou. Hier ontspannen we nog even en sluiten we de dag af. Naar dit hotel zullen we de rest van onze reis terugkeren.

After a very long, bumpy ride we arrived in our hotel in Kedougou. This is where we will relax a little and cope with our experiences of the day. We will keep returning to this hotel for the rest of our trip.
